Xmas dinner

Christmas is here again. It’s a period we’ve been waiting for to celebrate with our loved ones. A period where parents prepare themselves to make the best Christmas dinner for everyone in the family. It’s a time of merriment, without thinking of watching those calories we’ve been watching all year.

Christmas as a child

As a child who grew up in Nigeria, Christmas had a lot of meaning. The celebration was massive. Parents ensured their kids looked the best. Christmas clothes was the main thing. Kids were so fashionable, with cool haircuts and styles. Kids made sure it was the day to visit friends and relatives. I didn’t grow up thinking of Santa (father Christmas) bringing me gifts. Instead, the more relatives I visited, the more money I got for Christmas. The highlight of Christmas, it’s the dinner. As a matter of fact, Christmas dinner was all day, from breakfast. One would wake up with food served by a neighbour that has already prepared the best meal. Then, another would walk in with more food. Irrespective of the number of food that gets delivered to your home, the dinner prepared by your parents always seems to be the most special dinner. Christmas was fun growing up.

Today’s Christmas

The way we celebrate today’s Christmas is quite different. These days, you rarely get neighbours knocking on your door to share their best dinner. We are not too bothered if our relatives are around us, as long as we can catch up on social media. Kids are no longer concerned about visiting relatives, instead they wait on Santa to deliver presents. However, one thing that has not changed is the special Christmas dinner. Even when parents can’t afford clothes for their kids, the kids will be happy once they know that the special food will be made.
